A Brief History

When Dean was four years old his mother died mysteriously in a fire in his baby brother's nursery -- caused, as they would later find out, by a demon. They ended up asking for help from their neighbours, staying there as their nearly destroyed house was investigated for a cause to the fire, one that John knew they wouldn't find -- Mary wasn't killed by an ordinary electrical fire. She'd been pinned to the ceiling, her midsection sliced open before bursting into flame. For months after his mother's death Dean refused to speak, scared out of his wits by what happened and what could have happened. He almost lost his little brother, Sam, and for about the same amount of months that he refused to speak he could be found in his brother's crib, holding him protectively.

His father, John Winchester, soon devoted his life to finding out who - or what - killed her, and as he learned about the darkness that could be found in the world he raised his sons to hunt the supernatural, killing evil things to seek answers and revenge. Dean always listened to and respected his father, being 'his good little soldier' and following his orders. By doing so Dean grew to be a brilliant hunter, expert in all things that involved fighting, shooting and saving innocent lives, and everything else that came with the hunting job description. He hated school because he didn't seem to fit in; his family was, frankly, a bunch of freaks who moved around the country, and he wasn't at any school long enough to actually make friends. He figured that everything he needed to know he'd learn from dad; there was hunting and protecting Sam and nothing else. A few girls here and there, perhaps, but getting into a relationship was out of the question; he couldn't confide in anyone about who he really was and what he really did for fear of them leaving.

Eventually Dean and his brother grew up, but when Sam left Dean and his father to go to University, things were just beginning. In 2005, John went missing. Dean went to find Sam at Stanford University to get him to help Dean in looking for him, and after a hunt that involved a Woman in White Sam's girlfriend, Jessica, was later killed by the same thing that killed their mother, which fueled Sam in wanting to find John and the demon that killed the two women he most loved. So the two started driving around the country together, looking for clues as to where their father was and saving as many people as they could along the way. Eventually they found John, leading to a lot of emotional stress for Dean and a very close call with a few demons. After a car accident - caused by yet another demon - Dean was left in a coma, roaming the hospital he was in in a ghostly form and almost getting sent to the 'afterlife' by a reaper before he was saved by his father making a deal with the yellow-eyed demon itself; John's life and a particular gun for Dean's life. Before John died, however, he told Dean that he was going to have to try and save Sam from the Demon's plans -- and if he couldn't, he would have to kill him. With this weighing down on his shoulders, Dean, being the protective older brother he is, swore to himself that he was going to save Sam or die trying.

Personality

Dean is a force to be reckoned with. He's loud and in-your-face and doesn't take crap from anyone. While tending to come off as an asshole to some, Dean is very loyal and caring -- most distinguishably to his family. He likes to get straight to the point of things, completely put off by beating around the bush and is usually almost bluntly honest -- of course, when he's not conning someone.

Dean likes to have fun. When he's not hunting he can be found dragging his younger brother to bars, flirting with girls, hustling pool and darts and otherwise horsing around. Sometimes he can be almost to the point of juvenile - which pisses Sam off - but even when he's to that point, he's absolutely serious about what he's doing. Hunting and protecting Sam comes before everything, even a bar full of hot chicks and people who positively suck at pool.

With a father like John, Dean grew up with not sharing his feelings. He keeps things buried inside and has only on occasion opened up a crack for Sam. Talking about things makes him feel vulnerable, and Dean, being a good soldier, does not want that. He won't mope or brood, however; he'll keep charging on and let the pain deal with itself. He's 'not in the sharing and caring mood' very often, it seems.

Dean is dependable, courageous and trustworthy, and if you ever need someone to save you from the thing in your closet, the monster in your basement or the demon in your sister, he's the guy to do it.
